However, practical applications of many existing multiferroic materials are infeasible due to the weak nature of the coupling between the magnetic and electrical orderings, meaning new magnetoelectric multiferroics featuring intrinsic coupling between their component orderings are sought instead. Here, we apply a symmetry-informed design approach to identify and realize the new manganite perovskite CeBaMn2O6 in which magnetoelectric coupling can be achieved via an intermediary non-polar structural distortion. Through first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that our chosen prototype system contains the required ingredients to achieve the desired magnetoelectric coupling. Using high-pressure/high-temperature synthesis conditions, we have been able to synthesize the CeBaMn2O6 perovskite system for the first time. Our subsequent neutron and electron diffraction measurements reveal that the desired symmetry-breaking ingredients exist in this system on a nanoscopic length scale, enabling magnetoelectric nanoregions to emerge within the material. Through this work, we showcase the potential of the new CeBaMn2O6 perovskite material as a promising system in which to realize strong magnetoelectric coupling, highlighting the potential of our symmetry-informed design approach in the pursuit of new magnetoelectric multiferroics for next-generation memory devices. Sánchez Physical Review B 105 DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.105.104104 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [18786] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Crystallographic analysis and thermoelectric studies of solid solutions Rh 1 − x Ir x Te 2 ( 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 ) are reported. All compositions show layered structures belonging to the P ¯ 3 m 1 space group at room temperature. IrTe 2 presents a first-order phase transition from the hexagonal to the triclinic lattice ( P ¯ 1 space group), which is monitored by synchrotron radiation x-ray powder diffraction. In the cooling-down process the transition appears at 240 K while in the warming-up process it begins at 280 K, showing a remarkable hysteresis. All compositions show a strong metallic behavior with enhanced Pauli paramagnetism and two regimes in the electrical resistivity. These regimes are associated with electron-electron scattering (at low temperature ρ ∼ T 2 ) and electron-phonon coupling (higher temperatures ρ ∼ T ). The Seebeck coefficient shows hole-type carriers for all the compounds.	Mar 2022

Senn Physical Review B 102 DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.102.014101 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [25166, 18786] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Hybrid improper ferroelectrics (HIFs) have been studied intensively over the past few years to gain an understanding of their temperature-induced phase transitions and ferroelectric switching pathways. Here we report a switching from a first- to a second-order phase transition pathway for HIFs Ca 3 − x Sr x Ti 2 O 7 , which is driven by the differing entropies of the phases that we identify as being associated with the dynamic motion of octahedral tilts and rotations. A greater understanding of the transition pathways in this class of layered perovskites, which host many physical properties that are coupled to specific symmetries and octahedral rotation and tilt distortions—such as superconductivity, negative thermal expansion, fast ion conductivity, ferroelectricity, among others—is a crucial step in creating novel functional materials by design.
