Dessau Science Advances 9 DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.adi4966 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [25827] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: BaNi2As2 is a structural analog of the pnictide superconductor BaFe2As2, which, like the iron-based superconductors, hosts a variety of ordered phases including charge density waves (CDWs), electronic nematicity, and superconductivity. Upon isovalent Sr substitution on the Ba site, the charge and nematic orders are suppressed, followed by a sixfold enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc). To understand the mechanisms responsible for enhancement of Tc, we present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of the Ba1−xSrxNi2As2 series, which agree well with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations throughout the substitution range. Analysis of our ARPES-validated DFT results indicates a Lifshitz transition and reasonably nested electron and hole Fermi pockets near optimal substitution where Tc is maximum. These nested pockets host Ni dxz/dyz orbital compositions, which we associate with the enhancement of nematic fluctuations, revealing unexpected connections to the iron-pnictide superconductors. This gives credence to a scenario in which nematic fluctuations drive an enhanced Tc.	Oct 2023

Dessau Npj Quantum Materials 8 DOI: 10.1038/s41535-023-00554-x Diamond Proposal Number(s): [24224] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Tetragonal CuMnAs is a room temperature antiferromagnet with an electrically reorientable Néel vector and a Dirac semimetal candidate. Direct measurements of the electronic structure of single-crystalline thin films of tetragonal CuMnAs using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) are reported, including Fermi surfaces (FS) and energy-wavevector dispersions. After correcting for a chemical potential shift of ≈− 390 meV (hole doping), there is excellent agreement of FS, orbital character of bands, and Fermi velocities between the experiment and density functional theory calculations. In addition, 2×1 surface reconstructions are found in the low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and ARPES. This work underscores the need to control the chemical potential in tetragonal CuMnAs to enable the exploration and exploitation of the Dirac fermions with tunable masses, which are predicted to be above the chemical potential in the present samples. Dessau APS March Meeting 2023 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: High-Tc cuprate superconductors in their normal state are known to have the mysterious strange-metal behavior near optimal doping with strong deviations from the conventional Fermi Liquid form of electronic scattering rates. In particular, these have been described by the marginal-fermi-liquid (MFL) form at optimal doping [1], or more generally the power-law-liquid (PLL) form over all doping levels [2]. Here with careful analysis of the intrinsic line shape of Angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) dispersion cuts, we report a comparative study of the both ω- and T- dependent scattering rate of (Pb)Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, La2-xSrxCuO4, as well as the copper-free perovskite superconductor Sr2RuO4. With a unified power-law-liquid form of the imaginary self-energy proposed by Reber et al [2], our fitted parameters reproduce the strange-metal and fermi-liquid-like behavior of the cuprate superconductors and Sr2RuO4, respectively. Surprisingly, we show a much stronger electronic coupling parameter for the scattering in the ruthenates compared to the cuprates, indicating another key difference between these different superconductors. Dessau Science Advances 9 DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.ade4418 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [17595] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The discovery of superconductivity in planar nickelates raises the question of how the electronic structure and correlations of Ni1+ compounds compare to those of the Cu2+ cuprate superconductors. Here, we present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the trilayer nickelate Pr4Ni3O8, revealing a Fermi surface resembling that of the hole-doped cuprates but with critical differences. Specifically, the main portions of the Fermi surface are extremely similar to that of the bilayer cuprates, with an additional piece that can accommodate additional hole doping. We find that the electronic correlations are about twice as strong in the nickelates and are almost k-independent, indicating that they originate from a local effect, likely the Mott interaction, whereas cuprate interactions are somewhat less local. Nevertheless, the nickelates still demonstrate the strange-metal behavior in the electron scattering rates. Understanding the similarities and differences between these two families of strongly correlated superconductors is an important challenge.	Jan 2023
