This work stems from the original studies initiated in 2012 towards a Diamond upgrade and provides the benefit of an additional straight section in the ring available for insertion devices. This paper reviews the DDBA design and layout, the implications for technical subsystems, the associated engineering challenges and the main results of the commissioning completed in April 2017. Diaz-Moreno Iop Conference Series: Materials Science And Engineering 278 CEC 2017 DOI: 10.1088/1757-899X/278/1/012055 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The work detailed here describes how a novel approach has been applied to overcome the challenging task of cryo-cooling the first monochromator crystals of many of the world's synchrotrons' more challenging beam lines. The beam line configuration investigated in this work requires the crystal to diffract 15 Watts of 4-34 keV X-ray wavelength and dissipate the additional 485 watts of redundant X-ray power without significant deformation of the crystal surface. In this case the beam foot print is 25 mm by 25 mm on a crystal surface measuring 38 mm by 25 mm and maintain a radius of curvature of more than 50 km. Currently the crystal is clamped between two copper heat exchangers which have LN2 flowing through them. There are two conditions that must be met simultaneously in this scenario: the crystal needs to be clamped strongly enough to prevent the thermal deformation developing whilst being loose enough not to mechanically deform the diffracting surface. An additional source of error also occurs as the configuration is assembled by hand, leading to human error in the assembly procedure. This new approach explores making the first crystal cylindrical with a sleeve heat exchanger. By manufacturing the copper sleeve to be slightly larger than the silicon crystal at room temperature the sleeve can be slid over the silicon and when cooled will form an interference fit. This has the additional advantage that the crystal and its heat exchanger become a single entity and will always perform the same way each time it is used, eliminating error due to assembly. Various fits have been explored to investigate the associated crystal surface deformations under such a regime.	Dec 2017

It uses multiple transducers eliminating the requirement for a mirror surface, allowing for an open geometry as the sound from multiple transducers combines to generate the acoustic trap which is configured to catch pico litres of crystal slurries. These acoustic traps also have the significant benefit of eliminating potential beam attenuation due to support structures or microfluidic devices. Additionally they meet the need to eliminate sample environments when experiments are carried out using an X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFEL) such as the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) as any sample environment would not survive the exposure to the X-Ray beam. XFELs generate Light a billion times brighter than the sun. The application for this system will be to examine turn over in Beta lactamase proteins which is responsible for bacteria developing antibiotic resistance and therefore of significant importance to future world health. The system will allow for diffraction data to be collected before and after turnover allowing for a better understanding of the underling processes. 	A thermal exploration of different monochromator crystal designs J. S. Stimson , M. Ward , S. Diaz-Moreno , P. Docker , J. Kay , J. Sutter MEDSI2016 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Eight potential monochromator crystal designs were subjected to a combination of three different beam powers on two different footprints. The temperature and thermal deformation were determined for each. It was found that thermal deformation of the lattice is negligible compared to the surface curvature, and that while the thinnest crystal wafer showed the smallest temperature increase, crystals cooled from the bottom alone demonstrated a far more uniform thermal deformation and a larger radius of curvature. Insertion Devices	Diamond multi-bend achromats for low emittance and new insertion devices J. Kay , N. Hammond MOPE37 DOI: 10.18429/JACoW-MEDSI2016-MOPE37 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Diamond Light Source is pioneering the move to a Multi Bend Achromat storage ring lattice for low emittance combined with the creation of new straight sections available for Insertion Devices (ID). Diamond is at an advanced stage of replacing one Double Bend Achromat (DBA) cell of the existing storage ring with a Double Double Bend Achromat (DDBA). The DDBA cell which is to be installed in Autumn 2016 has 4 dipoles and has been designed with a new straight section in the middle. This allows ID radiation to shine down an existing Bending Magnet port in the shield wall for a new micro-focus protein crystallography beamline called VMX-m. This same principle will be applied to the proposed Diamond II project which will be based on a Double Triple Bend Achromat with 6 dipoles per cell achieving even lower emittance whilst providing many more IDs. An analytical model was constructed of a single silicon crystal monochromator. This model was used to examine the heat transfer processes within the monochromator. It was discovered that extracting heat from the top surface of the monochromator could cause the peak temperature to be below the surface of the crystal; this dislocation was shown to be approximately 10% of the thickness of the crystal when 20% of the input power was extracted from the top surface. In this way a new Insertion Device (ID) straight can be created and so ID light can be produced and delivered to a beamline previously only capable of receiving Bending Magnet (BM) radiation. This project is in support of the micro-focus Protein Crystallography (MX) beamline VMX-m which is scheduled to take users towards the end of 2017. We present results of measurements of the new narrow bore, high strength, quadrupoles and sextupoles, as well as the four new gradient dipoles. Fabrication of entirely new narrow-gap vacuum vessel strings, a mixture of copper and stainless steel is also described. The status of assembly of the two 7m long girders is presented, as well as other preparatory engineering, power supply, controls and high level software work.	Jun 2016

Spink IPAC 2016 DOI: 10.18429/JACoW-IPAC2016-WEPOW047 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: 300 mA beam in the Diamond Light Source storage ring is presently maintained by two 500 MHz superconducting (SC) CESR-B cavities. Cavity reliability is acceptable at voltages up to 1.4 MV per cavity but falls off rapidly above. Installation of extra cavities would reduce the voltage demand on the current cavities and also the operating power level of the amplifiers, with commensurate improvement in reliability. Furthermore, two recent SC cavity failures have resulted in machine down-time and reduced-current operation, and repair has proven to be prolonged and expensive. It is therefore planned to install two normal conducting (NC) cavities into the ring to support operation of the SC cavities and to act as a safeguard against any future SC cavity failures.
