Kuepper Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics DOI: 10.1039/C7CP08689J Diamond Proposal Number(s): [11190] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We apply X-ray magnetic circular dichroism to address the internal magnetic structure of two very promising star shaped macrocyclic complexes with a CuII3TbIII core. These complexes are rare examples prepared with a macrocyclic ligand which show indications of SMM (Single Molecule Magnet) behavior, and they differ only in ring size: one is of a propylene linked macrocycle, [CuII3TbIII(LPr)(NO3)2(MeOH)(H2O)2](NO3)·3H2O (nickname Cu3Tb(LPr)), and the other is the butylene linked analogue, [CuII3TbIII(LBu)(NO3)2(MeOH)(H2O)](NO3)·3H2O (nickname Cu3Tb(LBu)). We analyze the orbital and spin contributions to the Cu and Tb ions quantitatively by applying the spin and orbital sum rules concerning the L2 (M4) / L3 (M5) edges. In combination with appropriate ligand field simulations we demonstrate that the Tb(III) ions contribute with high orbital magnetic moments to the magnetic anisotropy, whereas the ligand field determines the easy axis of magnetization. Furthermore, we confirm that the Cu(II) ions in both molecules are in a divalent valence state, the magnetic moments of the three Cu ions appear to be canted due to 3d-3d intramolecular magnetic interactions. For Cu3Tb(LPr), corresponding element specific magnetization loops, reflect that the Cu(II) contribution to the overall magnetic picture becomes more important as the temperature is lowered. This implies a low value for the 3d-4f coupling.	May 2018

Lovesey Physical Review B 85 (14) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.85.144421 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction by gallium ferrate (GaFeO3) at Friedel pairs of charge allowed reflections in the vicinity of the Fe K edge are presented. By use of the magnetization difference, the interference of charge diffraction with the magnetic diffraction is extracted. The study of Friedel pairs and concentrating at the pre-edge allows us to extract the effect of inversion symmetry breaking on the magnetic Fe 3d shell. The data are analyzed using a model based on atomic multipole moments which are magnetic and have no space inversion symmetry (magnetoelectric) interfering with the charge scattering. This model successfully describes data as a function of azimuthal angle and for different incident polarization and it shows that data can be directly related to the magnetoelectric dipole (toroidal) and quadrupole moments. Though the model describes most of the observations successfully, how to correctly describe the observed magnetic nonresonant intensity below the edge remains an open question.	Apr 2012

Lovesey Physical Review B 82 (10), 104411 DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.82.104411 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [1551] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction experiments on space group forbidden reflections of type (0k0) with k odd taken in the vicinity of the Fe K edge are used to study magnetoelectric effects in GaFeO3. The main intensity of the various spectral features is caused by the E1-E1 transition and can be ascribed to the observation of an electric quadrupole moment, giving different intensities within a Friedel pair. Collecting the magnetic field difference intensity by having the magnetization parallel or antiparallel to the c axis in the ferrimagnetic phase is discussed in the framework of magnetoelectric multipole moments, which are both parity and time odd. The azimuthal angle dependence and the sign change in the magnetic signal when going from (0k0) to (0k̅ 0) reflections can be understood by the interference of the electric quadrupole with that of magnetoelectric quadrupole and octupole moments. Lovesey Physical Review B 80 (14), 140410 DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.80.140410 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We present resonant soft x-ray Bragg diffraction data on the space-group forbidden (010) reflection at the Fe L-2,L-3 edges of magnetoelectric GaFeO3. Observed intensities give direct evidence for strange atomic multi-poles that violate both time and space inversion, in particular a magnetoelectric quadrupole. The discovery of magnetoelectric multipoles in the open 3d shell is a direct measure of coupling between magnetic and electric properties and a basis to a microscopic understanding of magnetically induced multiferroics.
