Point-by- point maps of elastic strain can thus be obtained in fine-grained engineering alloys, typically using synchrotron X-rays or neutrons. In this paper, a novel approach is presented to calculate the elastic strain energy release rate of a loaded crack from two-dimensional strain maps that are obtained by diffraction. The method is based on a Finite Element approach, which uses diffraction data to obtain the parameters required to calculate the J-integral via the contour integral method. The J integral is robust to uncertainties in the crack tip position and to poor definition of the field in the crack vicinity, and does not rely on theoretical assumptions of the field shape. A validation of the technique is presented using a synthetic dataset from a finite element model. Its experimental application is demonstrated in an analysis of a synchrotron X-ray diffraction strain map for a loaded fatigue crack in a bainitic steel.	Jun 2016

This was studied experimentally by digital volume correlation analysis of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray computed tomographs, which quantified the damage via measurement of the 3D displacement fields within the material. The experimental data are compared with the model simulations, and demonstrate the applicability of the modelling strategy to simulate damage development in a heterogeneous quasi-brittle material. Experimental methods are needed that can detect and quantify the development of mechanical damage, to support modelling and qualification tests for these critical components. In situ observations of damage development have been obtained of tensile and C-ring mechanical test specimens of a braided nuclear grade SiC-SiC ceramic composite tube, using a combination of ex situ and in situ computed X-ray tomography observation and digital volume correlation analysis. The gradual development of damage by matrix cracking and also the influence of non-uniform loading are examined.	Jan 2016
