Structural strain at electrolyte:electrode interfaces could potentially alter the devices’ charge transport properties, therefore understanding the structural behavior of electrode surfaces under operating conditions is important. The functional oxide single crystal substrate SrLaAlO4 has been well-characterized with bulk structure studies; however, there are very few studies of SrLaAlO4 surface structures. Here, we present an investigation of the surface structure of SrLaAlO4 (001) substrates using surface x-ray diffraction under UHV conditions (10−10 Torr) with the substrate held at either room temperature or 650 °C. Best-fit models using a 1:1 ratio of Sr:La showed significant distortions to the surface AlO6 octahedra.	Nov 2023

Skinner , Ainara Aguadero Advanced Materials Interfaces 247 DOI: 10.1002/admi.201901440 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [13530, 16839] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Understanding the effects of lattice strain on oxygen surface and diffusion kinetics in oxides is a controversial subject that is critical for developing efficient energy storage and conversion materials. In this work, high‐quality epitaxial thin films of the model perovskite La0.5Sr0.5Mn0.5Co0.5O3−δ (LSMC), under compressive or tensile strain, are characterized with a combination of in situ and ex situ bulk and surface‐sensitive techniques. The results demonstrate a nonlinear correlation of mechanical and chemical properties as a function of the operation conditions. It is observed that the effect of strain on reducibility is dependent on the “effective strain” induced on the chemical bonds. In‐plain strain, and in particular the relative BO length bond, is the key factor controlling which of the B‐site cation can be reduced preferentially. Furthermore, the need to use a set of complimentary techniques to isolate different chemically induced strain effects is proven. With this, it is confirmed that tensile strain favors the stabilization of a more reduced lattice, accompanied by greater segregation of strontium secondary phases and a decrease of oxygen exchange kinetics on LSMC thin films. Fermin Chemelectrochem 69 DOI: 10.1002/celc.201800729 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [10306, 15151] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: LaMnO3 has been identified as one of the most active systems towards the 4‐electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under alkaline conditions, although the rationale for its high activity in comparison to other perovskites remains to be fully understood. LaMnO3 oxide nanoparticles are synthesised by an ionic‐liquid based method over a temperature range of 600 to 950 °C. This work describes a systematic study of the LaMnO3 properties, from bulk to the outermost surface layers, as a function of the synthesis temperature to relate them to the ORR activity. The bulk and surface composition of the particles are characterised by transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray absorption and X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), as well as low‐energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEIS). The particle size and surface composition are strongly affected by temperature, although the effect is non‐monotonic. The number density of redox active Mn sites is obtained from electrochemical measurements, and correlates well with the trends observed by XPS and LEIS. ORR studies of carbon‐supported LaMnO3 employing rotating ring‐disk electrodes show a step increase in the mean activity of individual surface Mn sites for particles synthesised above 700 °C. Our analysis emphasises the need to establish protocols for quantifying turn‐over frequency of single active sites in these complex materials to elucidate appropriate structure‐activity relationships.
