Compared with the equiatomic Gd25Tb25Co25Al25 HE-MG, the non-equiatomic RE36Tb20Co20Al24 (RE = Gd, Dy, or Ho) alloys show better glass-forming ability, which is attributed to the deep binary eutectic compositions used for alloy design. All RE36Tb20Co20Al24 alloys undergo second-order magnetic transition. An extreme peak value of magnetic entropy change is obtained as 10.3 J kg–1 K–1 (5 T) for the Ho36Tb20Co20Al24 alloy. In-situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction was conducted to observe the microstructural difference among non-equiatomic samples at cryogenic temperatures. The results indicate that Gd36Tb20Co20Al24 alloy possesses a relatively large average value of the dispersion of local clusters at a low-temperature range. This, combined with the critical exponent β close to 0.5 of Gd36Tb20Co20Al24 alloy, leads to its widest working temperature span among non-equiatomic samples. This work successfully establishes the connection between microstructure and magnetocaloric properties of HE-MGs, which is beneficial for understanding the physical mechanism of the magnetocaloric behaviors of HE-MGs. I15-Extreme Conditions	Manufacture and characterization of HoErCo medium-entropy alloy microwires with excellent magnetic entropy change Ying Bao , Hongxian Shen , Jierong Liang , Hangboce Yin , Ze Li , Yongjiang Huang , Jianfei Sun Journal Of Non-Crystalline Solids DOI: 10.1016/j.jnoncrysol.2020.120570 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [17412] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: A melt-extracted HoErCo medium-entropy alloy (MEA) with large magnetic entropy change and excellent magnetic refrigerant capacity is successfully designed in this study. The microstructure evolution of these microwires near room temperature is studied by an in-situ high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HEXRD). The wires show typical amorphous characteristics during room temperature to 250 K. For a field change of 5 T, the maximum magnetic entropy change (-ΔSMmax) of the microwires reaches a maximum value of 15.0 J•kg−1 K−1. Magnetization measurements revealed a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition at TC~16 K. The refrigerant capacity (RC) and relative cooling power (RCP) are 527 J•kg−1 and 600 J•kg−1, respectively. This investigation highlights the potential of HoErCo MEA microwires as promising magnetocaloric effect materials for cryogenic applications of magnetic cooling.	Dec 2020
I15-Extreme Conditions	Temperature-induced atomic structural evolution in a liquid Ga-based alloy Mengwan Li , Yongjiang Huang , Peng Xue , Songshan Jiang , Weinan Ru , Zhiqin Yang , Hangboce Yin , Dominik Daisenberger , Hongxian Shen , Jianfei Sun Vacuum 170 DOI: 10.1016/j.vacuum.2019.108966 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [9902, 8858, 17412] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The atomic-scale structural evolution of Ga68.5In21·5Sn10 (wt. %) liquid alloy has been explored utilizing in-situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction from room temperature (293 K) to around the melting point. During the process of decreasing temperature, bond lengths of dominant atomic pairs decrease, whereas the total coordination numbers of the first nearest neighbor shell increase. This structural transition is ascribed to the redistribution of atoms and/or clusters and the decrease of vacancies induced by decreasing temperature. Our results are supportive for further understanding the atomic-scale structural evolution of liquid alloys at the low-temperature condition.	Dec 2019
