Watson , Cephise Cacho , Dmitry Marchenko , Andrei Varykhalov , Irena Feldman , Binghai Yan , Amit Kanigel Npj Quantum Materials DOI: 10.1038/s41535-026-00889-1 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We use micro-angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (micro-ARPES) to investigate chiral charge density waves (CDWs) in 4Hb-TaS2 with micron-scale spatial resolution. In the 1T layers of 4Hb-TaS2, we uncover coexisting left- and right-handed CDW domains and resolve four distinct spectral patterns arising from the interplay of chirality and rotational stacking. In contrast, bulk 1T-TaS2 exhibits uniform chirality. In addition, 4Hb-TaS2 shows negligible out-of-plane dispersion of the 1T-derived bands, in contrast to the large interlayer coupling observed in bulk 1T-TaS2. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations corroborate this picture, revealing that the interlayer interaction of the chiral order in 4Hb-TaS2 is nearly two orders of magnitude weaker than in the 1T polytype. Our findings establish 4Hb-TaS2 as a quasi-two-dimensional platform for exploring tunable chiral CDW phenomena.	May 2026

Watson , Cephise Cacho , Irena Feldman , Amit Kanigel Physical Review B 113 DOI: 10.1103/kj9t-8mys Diamond Proposal Number(s): [33131] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The origin of the insulating state in 1⁢𝑇 −TaS2 has long been a subject of debate. A short current pulse transforms this insulating state into a metastable metallic phase. Using micro–angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the electronic structure of this phase and uncover spatially dependent modifications caused by the current pulse. In some regions of the sample, a Fermi surface emerges, while others remain gapped. Detailed band structure analysis reveals that the metallic regions exhibit an electronic structure similar to that observed in the high-temperature phase of 1⁢𝑇 −TaS2, characterized by suppressed energy gaps and bands crossing the Fermi level. Furthermore, the metallic and insulating regions display distinct out of plane dispersions, consistent with the current pulse influencing the Star of David dimers that characterize the insulating phase. I05-ARPES	Band inversion and topology of the bulk electronic structure in FeSe0.45Te0.55 Himanshu Lohani , Tamaghna Hazra , Amit Ribak , Yuval Nitzav , Huixia Fu , Binghai Yan , Mohit Randeria , Amit Kanigel Physical Review B 101 DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.101.245146 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [15822] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: FeSe 0.45 Te 0.55 (FeSeTe) has recently emerged as a promising candidate to host topological superconductivity, with a Dirac surface state and signatures of Majorana bound states in vortex cores. However, correlations strongly renormalize the bands compared to electronic structure calculations, and there is no evidence for the expected bulk band inversion. We present here a comprehensive angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) study of FeSeTe as a function of photon energies ranging from 15–100 eV. We find that although the top of the bulk valence band shows essentially no k z dispersion, its normalized intensity exhibits a periodic variation with k z . We show, using ARPES selection rules, that the intensity oscillation is a signature of band inversion indicating a change in the parity going from Γ to Z . We also present a simple realistic tight-binding model which gives insight into ARPES observations. Thus we provide direct evidence for a topologically nontrivial bulk band structure that supports protected surface states.	Jun 2020

Kanigel Science Advances 6 DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.aax9480 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [15822] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Van der Waals materials offer unprecedented control of electronic properties via stacking of different types of two-dimensional materials. A fascinating frontier, largely unexplored, is the stacking of strongly correlated phases of matter. We study 4Hb-TaS2, which naturally realizes an alternating stacking of 1T-TaS2 and 1H-TaS2 structures. The former is a well-known Mott insulator, which has recently been proposed to host a gapless spin-liquid ground state. The latter is a superconductor known to also host a competing charge density wave state. This raises the question of how these two components affect each other when stacked together. We find a superconductor with a Tc of 2.7 Kelvin and anomalous properties, of which the most notable one is a signature of time-reversal symmetry breaking, abruptly appearing at the superconducting transition. This observation is consistent with a chiral superconducting state.	Mar 2020
