However, efficient mechanofluorochromic materials are rarely explored due to the deficiency of existing design strategies. Here, we demonstrate the incarceration of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials within metal-organic framework (MOF) single crystals to construct a composite system with turn-on mechanofluorochromism. A new type of AIE@MOF material was designed: integrating a zeolitic MOF (ZIF-71) and tetraphenylethylene (TPE, a topical AIE material) to generate a TPE@ZIF-71 system with exceptional turn-on type mechanofluorochromism. Using terahertz vibrational spectroscopy, we show the unique fluorochromism mainly emanates from the enhanced nanoconfinement effect exerted by ZIF-71 host on TPE guest under pressure. Compared with pure TPE, we demonstrate the nanoconfinement in AIE@MOF not only changes the TPE's turn-off type sensing behavior to a turn-on type, but boosts the original sensitivity markedly by tenfold. Significantly, because ZIF-71 prevents the spontaneous recrystallization of TPE upon unloading, this allows TPE@ZIF-71 to record the stress history. This is the first demonstration of the Guest@MOF system combining the concepts of AIE and MOF; its promising properties and potential engineering applications will stimulate new directions pertaining to luminescent stress sensors and smart optics. Korsunsky Applied Materials Today 26 DOI: 10.1016/j.apmt.2021.101282 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [24560] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: All solid state, thin film Li-NMC batteries produced by Physical Vapour Deposition have the potential to revolutionize the internet of things by integrating ultra-fast charging and high energy densities into small portable devices. In these systems, the integrity of the cathode-solid electrolyte interface is of particular importance, as it determines the internal battery resistance and attainable charge rate. To understand and control the effect of manufacturing parameters on the performance and interface stability in these systems, as well as the mechanisms resulting in interface degradation, a novel approach was used that combined in situ battery lamella charging with electron nano-diffraction and multiphysics Finite Element modeling. Experimentally observed cathode strains and degradation were correlated with deposition parameter-controlled grain orientation, to determine ideal deposition conditions for enhanced thin film battery charging and discharging behavior. It was identified that (104) oriented cathode grains minimize anode-electrolyte interface degradation, while allowing for high charge and discharge rates, as well as significantly reducing the cathode-electrolyte interface resistance. Furthermore, the residual stress state of individual thin film battery layers, as well as the cathode grain orientation were identified as material design parameters to optimize cell performance and durability with potential capacity retention enhancements of up to 28%. Lee Applied Materials Today 23 DOI: 10.1016/j.apmt.2021.101009 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [19354] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a revolutionary manufacturing technology that fabricates parts with unparalleled complexity, layer-by-layer. However, there are limited choices of commercial powders for LPBF, constrained partly by the laser absorbance, an area that is not well investigated. Carbon additives are commonly used to promote near infra-red (NIR) absorbance of the powders but their efficiency is limited. Here, we combine operando synchrotron X-ray imaging with chemical characterisation techniques to elucidate the role of additives on NIR absorption, melt track and defect evolution mechanisms during LPBF. We employ a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) additive to enable LPBF of low NIR absorbance powder, SiO2, under systematic build conditions. This work successfully manufactured glass tracks with a high relative density (99.6%) and overhang features (> 5 mm long) without pre/post heat treatment. Compared to conventional carbon additives, the rGO increases the powder's NIR absorbance by ca. 3 times and decreases the warpage and porosity in LPBF glass tracks. Our approach will dramatically widen the palette of materials for laser processing and enable existing LPBF machines to process low absorbance powder, such as SiO2, using a NIR beam.	Jun 2021
