Activated hydrogel biopolymer composites were fabricated for strontium remediation from groundwater. Batch uptake demonstrated a maximal stontium uptake capacity of 109 mg g−1, much higher than unactivated hydrogel controls. Activation also more than doubled the decontamination factor at environmentally relevant concentrations. EXAFS was used to investigate the binding mechanism, revealing inner sphere complexation of strontium for the first time. Biopolymer composities synthesized for these studies are sustainable and cheap remediation materials that exhibit good strontium uptake and inner sphere binding.	Nov 2022

Hyatt Journal Of Radioanalytical And Nuclear Chemistry 309 DOI: 10.1007/s10967-020-07538-2 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [24074] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Uranyl oxalate (UO2C2O4·xH2O) may exist at the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle (NFC) as an intermediate in spent fuel reprocessing. The conditions used in aqueous reprocessing and thermal treatment can affect the physical and chemical properties of the material. Furthermore, trace impurities, such as Fe, may incorporate into the structure of these materials. In nuclear forensics, understanding relationships between processing variables aids in determination of provenance and processing history. In this study, the thermal decomposition of UO2C2O4·3H2O and phase analysis of its thermal products are examined. Their morphologies are discussed with respect to a matrix of solution processing conditions.	Jan 2021
