Mailis Optical Materials Express 9 DOI: 10.1364/OME.9.002573 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [17304] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We present a method for the production of polycrystalline Si (poly-Si) photonic micro-structures based on laser writing. The method consists of local laser-induced crystallization of amorphous silicon (a-Si) followed by selective etching in chemical agents that act preferentially on the a-Si material, consequently revealing the poly-Si content of the film. We have studied the characteristics of these structures as a function of the laser processing parameters and we demonstrate their potential photonic functionality by fabricating polycrystalline silicon ridge optical waveguides. Preliminary waveguide transmission performance results indicated an optical transmission loss of 9 dB/cm in these unrefined devices.	May 2019

Gibson Optical Materials Express 8 DOI: 10.1364/OME.8.001435 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [13025] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Glass-clad, GaSb-core fibers were drawn and subsequently laser annealed. The as-drawn fibers were found to be polycrystalline, possess Sb inclusions, and have oxide contamination concentrations of less than 3 at%. Melting and resolidifying regions in the cores using 10.6 µm CO2 laser radiation yielded single crystalline zones with enhanced photoluminescence (PL), including the first observation of strong room temperature PL from a crystalline core fiber. Annealed fibers show low values of tensile strain and a bandgap close to that of bulk GaSb.	May 2018

Peacock Optical Materials Express 7 DOI: 10.1364/OME.7.002055 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [13025] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Crystalline silicon optical fibers are emerging as a promising platform for a wide range of optoelectronic applications. Here we report a crystallographic study of the material properties within silicon fibers that have been post-processed via a tapering procedure to obtain small, few micron-sized core diameters. Our results reveal that the tapering process can improve the polysilicon quality of the core through the formation of large, centimeter long crystal grains, thus significantly reducing the optical losses.
