Hriljac , Zoe Schnepp Inorganic Chemistry 52 DOI: 10.1021/acs.inorgchem.0c03692 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [15959] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The sol–gel synthesis of iron carbide (Fe3C) nanoparticles proceeds through multiple intermediate crystalline phases, including iron oxide (FeOx) and iron nitride (Fe3N). The control of particle size is challenging, and most methods produce polydisperse Fe3C nanoparticles of 20–100 nm in diameter. Given the wide range of applications of Fe3C nanoparticles, it is essential that we understand the evolution of the system during the synthesis. Here, we report an in situ synchrotron total scattering study of the formation of Fe3C from gelatin and iron nitrate sol–gel precursors. A pair distribution function analysis reveals a dramatic increase in local ordering between 300 and 350 °C, indicating rapid nucleation and growth of iron oxide nanoparticles. The oxide intermediate remains stable until the emergence of Fe3N at 600 °C. Structural refinement of the high-temperature data revealed local distortion of the NFe6 octahedra, resulting in a change in the twist angle suggestive of a carbonitride intermediate. This work demonstrates the importance of intermediate phases in controlling the particle size of a sol–gel product. It is also, to the best of our knowledge, the first example of in situ total scattering analysis of a sol–gel system.	May 2021

Here, we describe an average and local structural study to probe the origins of high-temperature oxide ion mobility in La10(GeO4)6O3 and La8Bi2(GeO4)6O3 oxygen-excess materials, using the low-conductivity interstitial oxide-free La8Sr2(GeO4)6O2 as a benchmark. For La10 and La8Bi2, we locate the interstitial oxygen, Oint, responsible for conductivity by Rietveld refinement and relate the P63/m to P1̅ phase transitions on cooling to oxygen ordering. Local structural studies using neutron total scattering reveal that well-ordered GeO5 square pyramidal groups form in the structure at low temperature, but that Oint becomes significantly more disordered in the high-conductivity, high-temperature structures, with a transition to more trigonal-bipyramid-like average geometry. We relate the higher conductivity of Bi materials to the presence of several Oint sites of similar energy in the structure, which correlates with its less-distorted low-temperature average structure. Evans , Ivana Radosavljevic Evans Journal Of Materials Chemistry A 116 DOI: 10.1039/C9TA08378B Diamond Proposal Number(s): [19729] Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Ba3NbMoO8.5 has recently been demonstrated to exhibit competitive oxide ion conductivity and to be stable under reducing conditions, making it an excellent potential electrolyte for solid oxide fuel cells. We report here the first investigation of the local structure in Ba3NbMoO8.5, carried out using variable-temperature neutron total scattering and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. This work reveals a significant degree of disorder in the material, even at ambient conditions, in both the cation and the anion arrangements and suggests the prevalence of the five-fold Nb/Mo coordination. In addition, high resolution powder X-ray diffraction data indicate that the temperature-dependent structural changes in Ba3NbMoO8.5 are due to a first order phase transition, and reveal a previously unreported effect of thermal history on the room-temperature form of the material. PDF modelling shows that Ba3NbMoO8.5 has an essentially continuous oxygen distribution in the ab plane at 600 °C which leads to its high oxide-ion conductivity.	Oct 2019

Radosavljevic Evans Journal Of Materials Chemistry A 116 DOI: 10.1039/C8TA00546J Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Introduction of Bi(III) into apatite-type germanate oxide ion conductors can improve the conductivity by up to two orders of magnitude. To account for these experimental findings, we have carried out the first ab initio molecular dynamics simulations study of the conduction mechanisms in lone pair-containing apatite-type oxide ion conductors. These calculations were performed on the series La10−xBixGe6O27 (x = 0, 2, 4) and were supported by neutron scattering experiments. We observe four types of oxide ion exchange mechanisms and describe the effects that the introduction of lone-pair cations has on the O2− migration pathways and on the overall conductivity.	Feb 2018
