Installed in the B22 Front End and using no optical elements except for filters, it provides sub-micrometre position sensitivity and sub-microradiant angular sensitivity to Bending Magnet source vertical movements. By sampling at 100 kHz frequency, Fast Fourier Transform analysis is continuously displayed and any periodic components in the Synchrotron Radiation emission are revealed within the exceptional bandwidth of 50 kHz. Long term source drift in position or angle are monitored and recorded every 0.5 seconds.	Mar 2013

The instrument is based on the robust and simple idea of a pinhole camera that collects the weakly scattered radiation from a thin sheet of a low-Z material placed in the X-ray beam at an acute angle. We demonstrate how by recording the scattered radiation with an appropriate detector, high-resolution beam characterisation can be performed in real-time. We present a mathematical model that describes the imaging process and beam position measurements. The theoretical evaluation of the resolution limit of our device and its dependence on various parameters are also discussed. Reported experimental results demonstrate the instruments capabilities in beam tracking and imaging applications.	Mar 2013
I23-Long wavelength MX	Towards long-wavelength protein crystallography: keeping a protein crystal frozen in vacuum Vitaliy Mykhaylyk , Armin Wagner Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 425, Article 012010 11th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI 2012) DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/425/1/012010 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: There is growing interest to explore the long-wavelength X-ray domain for macromolecular crystallography (MX) experiments but there are a number of practical issues that make these experiments difficult to perform. In this article we study several aspects related to cooling a protein crystal in a vacuum environment. We investigated thermal contact conductance (TCC) of copper-copper joints and designed a demountable sample holder assembly with a magnetic joint that facilitates good thermal conductivity and reliability over a long time period. The thermal conductivity of amorphous ice formed by a 20% solution of ethylene glycol was studied. It is concluded that the ice thickness is the factor that can compromise the cooling of protein crystals and therefore it should be carefully controlled.	Mar 2013

Alcock Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 425 (5) 11th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI 2012) DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/425/5/052024 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Opto-mechanical mounts can cause significant distortions to monochromator crystals and mirrors if not designed or implemented carefully. A slope measuring profiler, the Diamond-NOM [1], was used to measure the change in tangential slope as a function of crystal clamping configuration and load. A three point mount was found to exhibit the lowest surface distortion (< 2μrad peak-to-valley) over the whole length of the monochromator 2nd crystal. A thermal circuit, comprising the liquid nitrogen manifold to the crystal, was modelled using experimental data for the 2nd crystal absorbed beam power and braid link thermal conductance. In the case of the I09 monochromator 2nd crystal assembly, the temperature drop across the 3 indium mount pads was calculated to be 25% of the total 0.22 K. Less than 1% loss of flux due to the 2nd crystal strain is expected at 25keV. This three pad mount will be used in the monochromators on the I09 and I23 beamlines at Diamond Light Source	Mar 2013
Accelerator Physics	Achieving and measuring sub-micrometer beam stability at 3rd generation light sources Guenther Rehm Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 425 (4) 11th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI 2012) DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/425/4/042001 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Electron beam stability at the source points of synchrotron radiation is an accepted requirement for the preservation of the low emittance provided in 3rd generation light sources. With emittances approaching 1nm rad this typically requires sub micrometer positional stability at the source point over time scales from milliseconds to at least hours and ideally much longer. These challenges are routinely met by the use of fast orbit feedback systems. This contribution sets out to first establish a relevant representation of stability over many orders of magnitude in time and looks at available stable references. To complement this, data on the electron and X-ray beam stability achieved at various operational light sources is compared.	Mar 2013

Bozzini Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 425 (18) 11th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI 2012) DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/425/18/182010 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: In this paper we report on the fabrication and testing of a novel concept of electrochemical microcell for in-situ soft X-ray microspectroscopy in transmission. The microcell, fabricated by electron-beam lithography, implements an improved electrode design, with optimal current density distribution and minimised ohmic drop, allowing the same three-electrode electrochemical control achievable with traditional cells. Moreover standard electroanalytical measurements, such as cyclic voltammetry, can be routinely performed. As far as the electrolyte is concerned, we selected a room-temperature ionic-liquid. Some of the materials belonging to this class, in addition to a broad range of outstanding electrochemical properties, feature two highlights that are crucial for in situ, soft X-ray transmission work: spinnability, enabling accurate thickness control, and stability to UHV, allowing operation of an open cell in the analysis chamber vacuum (10−6 mbar). The cell can, of course, be used also with non-vacuum stable electrolytes in the sealed version developed in previous work in our group. In this study, the microcell designed, fabricated and tested in situ by applying an anodic polarisation to a Au electrode and following the formation of a distribution of corrosion features. This specific material combination presented in this work does not limit the cell concept, that can implement any electrodic material grown by lithography, any liquid electrolyte and any spinnable solid electrolyte. The optic has the potential to generate distortion-free beams and enable dynamical focusing and wavefront control. We present results of this optic, including ex-situ characterisation of the surface topography using the Diamond-NOM, and in-situ investigation using synchrotron light at Diamond's B16 Test beamline. The wavefront properties of the mirror have also been studied using at-wavelength metrology methods based on X-ray speckle tracking.	Mar 2013

The s-component reflectivity (Rs) of Beryl crystal reaches up to 10% with polarizing power Rs/Rp over 1000 at 1.1keV. The free-standing W/B4C multilayer has the phase shift over 5 degrees with moderate transmission up to 1.7keV. The Bragg resonance width of the Beryl crystal is only 350 microradians at 1.1keV, and the incidence angle of the beam onto the crystal needs to be constant within 50 microradians or better. A high-precision polarimeter was used for the polarimetry experiment, and the complete polarization analysis of the APPLE II undulator at 1.1 keV and 1.56keV will be presented.	Mar 2013
B16-Test Beamline Metrology Optics	Development of at-wavelength metrology using grating-based shearing interferometry at Diamond Light Source Hongchang Wang , Sebastien Berujon , Kawal Sawhney Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 425 11th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI 2012) DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/425/5/052021 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The grating-based shearing interferometer has been established and further developed on B16 at Diamond Light Source. The beamline performances of both an X-ray plane mirror and a compound refractive lens (CRL) have been investigated using this technique. The slope error of the X-ray mirror was retrieved from the wavefront phase gradient, which was measured using two different processing schemes: phase stepping and moiré fringe analysis. The interferometer has demonstrated a high sensitivity with sub-microradian accuracy. Some of the advantages, disadvantages and limitations for the two approaches will also be presented.	Mar 2013

Dobrynin , E C M Rial , Austen Rose , Paul Steadman , C Thompson , A Thomson , Hongchang Wang Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 425 11th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI 2012) DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/425/3/032011 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: A pair of 2m long APPLE-II type undulators have been built for the I10 BLADE beamline at Diamond Light Source. These 48mm period devices have gap as well as four moveable phase axes which provide the possibility to produce the full range of elliptical polarizations as well as linear polarization tilted through a full 180deg. The mechanical layout chosen has a 'master and slave' arrangement of the phase axes on the top and bottom. This arrangement allows the use of symmetries to provide operational ease for both changing energy using only the master phase while keeping fixed linear horizontal or circular polarization, as well as changing linear polarization angle while keeping fixed energy [1]. The design allows very fast motion of the master phase arrays, without sacrifice of accuracy, allowing the possibility of mechanical polarization switching at 1Hz for dichroism experiments. We present the mechanical design features of these devices, as well as the results of magnetic measurements and shimming from before installation. Finally, we present the results of characterization of these devices by the beamline, including polarimetry, which has been done on the various modes of motion to control energy and polarization. These modes of operation have been available to users since 2011.	Mar 2013
