Previous virtual accelerators for synchrotron light sources have used Tracy and Elegant as the simulator, but without Python bind- ings for accelerator simulations it has been difficult to create a virtual accelerator using Python. With the development of Python Accelerator Toolbox (pyAT), that is now possi- ble. Bartolini IPAC2017 DOI: 10.18429/JACoW-IPAC2017-WEPAB095 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The Diamond storage ring has been modified by replacing one of the existing double bend achromat (DBA) cells with a double-DBA (DDBA) cell*. This change represents the largest modification to the storage ring since it was first commissioned in 2006, and was installed and fully commissioned during a single 8 week shutdown in autumn 2016. In view of this tight schedule, the planned commissioning steps and all high-level software needed to be developed and thoroughly tested in advance. Electron beam commissioning occupied the final 2 weeks of the shutdown, during which the injected electrons were captured and accumulated, the correct linear lattice was established, the nonlinear beam dynamics were studied, IDs were closed and the target 300 mA was achieved. This paper presents an overview of these activities.	May 2017
Magnets	Correction of 10 Hz orbit distortion from Diamond's I10 fast switching chicane M. J. Furseman , C. P. Bailey , S. Gayadeen , G. Rehm , W. A. H. Rogers ICALEPCS2017 DOI: 10.18429/JACoW-ICALEPCS2017-TUPHA118 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The I10 beamline at Diamond Light Source is configured to study circular dichroism. To increase signal to noise ratio between the two beam polarisations and increase temporal resolution the beamline is fed by two separate IDs that are typically configured with opposite handed polarisations. A chicane of steering magnets with programmable power supplies is used to provide 10 Hz switching between the two photon beams by producing a dynamic closed bump that alternates the on-axis trajectory of the electron beam between the two IDs. In order to maintain the closed bump and make the switching transparent to the rest of the photon beamlines the phase and amplitude of the sine functions applied to the chicane magnets must be exactly correct. In this paper the linear scheme that was used to correct the residual 10 Hz orbit distortion is presented. Future work that uses the fully programmable nature of the magnet power supply controllers to correct high order distortions is also discussed.	Jan 2018

Rose IPAC2017 DOI: 10.18429/JACoW-IPAC2017-TUPIK115 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Upgrading one Double Bend Achromat cell to a Double Double Bend Achromat (DDBA) cell in the Diamond Light Source storage ring necessitated a broad range of changes to the overall control system. These changes covered developments to the interface layer of the controls system to incorporate changes to the underlying instrumentation, associated development of user interface, changes to real-time feedback and feed-forward processes and to the online accelerator model. Given the pressures to minimise the shutdown length, the control system developments were optimised for time effective installation and commissioning. This paper outlines the control system developments for DDBA, the management process and lessons learnt from this process.	May 2017

Conf. on Accelerator and Large Experimental Control Systems ICALEPCS2017 DOI: 10.18429/JACoW-ICALEPCS2017-TUPHA190 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Control System Studio (CS-Studio) is one of the most widely-used display managers for EPICS. It is based on the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (Eclipse RCP), allowing for coherent integration of interfaces for different systems with common graphical elements and preferences. However, this user interface presents a different way of working to those from the previous generation of EPICS tools such as Extensible Display Manager (EDM) and Striptool. At Diamond Light Source, EDM has been used since commissioning in two different ways: for machine operations and for beamline controls. Both uses of EDM will eventually be replaced with CS-Studio and significant effort has been put into this transition. Two kinds of change proved necessary: adaptations to CS-Studio itself, and changes to the typical user workflows. This paper presents both types of changes that were needed to make CS-Studio a productive tool at Diamond.	Jan 2018

Equipped with these, the relevant use cases are then captured; for a streamlined approach. To enable professionals, i.e., software engineers, to efficiently prototype & architect a CAD tool available to mechanical engineers since the mid-1960s. In other words, robust design of a modern synchrotron is an exercise in/pursuit of the art of Engineering-Science.	Aug 2021
