Bell Physica Status Solidi (b) DOI: 10.1002/pssb.202100432 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [13769] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Antimony ultra-thin films in tensile strain are grown on InAs(111)B substrates and studied in situ using surface X-ray diffraction. The detailed atomic structures of two highly crystalline Sb(0001) films are derived, with thicknesses of 19 and 4 bilayers. Features considered in structural modelling include interfacial intermixing, surface roughness, individual layer relaxations and rotational twin domains (RTDs). The 4-bilayer film shows significant structural relaxation in every layer, while both films include RTDs. The results are discussed in relation to the topological properties of low-dimensional Sb. Phil Woodruff The Journal Of Physical Chemistry C DOI: 10.1021/acs.jpcc.2c01432 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [14884, 4884] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: While the phenomenon of metal substrate adatom incorporation into molecular overlayers is generally believed to occur in several systems, the experimental evidence for this relies on the interpretation of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images, which can be ambiguous and provides no quantitative structural information. We show that surface X-ray diffraction (SXRD) uniquely provides unambiguous identification of these metal adatoms. We present the results of a detailed structural study of the Au(111)-F4TCNQ system, combining surface characterization by STM, low-energy electron diffraction, and soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with quantitative experimental structural information from normal incidence X-ray standing wave (NIXSW) and SXRD, together with dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Excellent agreement is found between the NIXSW data and the DFT calculations regarding the height and conformation of the adsorbed molecule, which has a twisted geometry rather than the previously supposed inverted bowl shape. SXRD measurements provide unequivocal evidence for the presence and location of Au adatoms, while the DFT calculations show this reconstruction to be strongly energetically favored.	Apr 2022

Aldous Spin DOI: 10.1142/S2010324714400256 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [8877, 6507] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The cubic polymorph of the binary transition metal pnictide (TMP) MnSb, c-MnSb, has been predicted to be a robust half-metallic ferromagnetic (HMF) material with minority spin gap 1 eV. Here, MnSb epilayers are grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on GaAs and In0:5Ga0:5As(111) substrates and analyzed using synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction. We find polymorphic growth of MnSb on both substrates, where c-MnSb co-exists with the ordinary niccolite n-MnSb polymorph. The grain size of the c-MnSb is of the order of tens of nanometer on both substrates and its appearance during MBE growth is independent of the very different epitaxial strain from the GaAs (3.1%) and In0:5Ga0:5As (0.31%) substrates. Heteroepitaxial growth of MnSb(0001) on GaAs(111) leads to the direct formation of islands, but the islands themselves grow in a local layer‐by‐layer fashion, having low aspect ratio and flat tops. Strained and relaxed islands co‐exist prior to island coalescence, confirming that dislocation formation occurs locally over a range of average film thicknesses.	Oct 2018
