Scagnoli Physical Review B 81 (8), 085107 DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.81.085107 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We have investigated the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of the Mott-Hubbard insulator vanadium sesquioxide (V2O3) by resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction at the vanadium K edge. Combining the information obtained from azimuthal angle scans, linear incoming polarization scans and by fitting collected data to the scattering amplitude derived from the established chemical I2/a and magnetic space groups we provide direct experimental evidence of the ordering motif of vanadium magnetoelectric multipoles in V2O3. Experimental data (azimuthal dependence and polarization analysis) collected at space-group forbidden Bragg reflections are successfully accounted within our model in terms of vanadium magnetoelectric multipoles. We demonstrate that resonant x-ray diffraction intensities in all space-group forbidden Bragg reflections of the kind (hkl)m with odd h are produced by an E1−E2 event. The determined multipolar parameters offer a test for ab initio calculations in this material, which can lead to a deeper and more quantitative understanding of the physical properties of V2O3. A quantitative agreement of the AXMLD is obtained with multiplet calculations where the 4f state is split by an effective cubic crystalline electrostatic field. The results indicate that the standard model of rare earths, where 4f electrons are treated as core states, is not correct and that the 4f orbitals contribute weakly to the magnetic anisotropy. Xu Physical Review B 81 (3) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.81.035419 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Ultrathin films of magnetite (Fe3O4) have been grown epitaxially on wurtzite wide bandgap semiconductor GaN(0001) surfaces using molecular-beam epitaxy. Reflection high-energy electron-diffraction patterns show a (111) orientation of the Fe3O4 films and in-plane epitaxial relationship of < 1 (1) over bar0 >(Fe3O4)parallel to < 11 (2) over bar0 >(GaN) and < 11 (2) over bar >(Fe3O4)parallel to < 1 (1) over bar 00 >(GaN) with the GaN(0001). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism confirm the growth of stoichiometric Fe3O4, instead of gamma-Fe2O3. The magnetic hysteresis loops and saturation magnetization M-s obtained by superconducting quantum interference device at room temperature show fast saturation of the Fe3O4 films with the magnetization close to that of the bulk single-crystal value. In-plane magnetoresistance (MR) measurements reveal negligibly small MR effects, further indicating that the films are free from antiphase boundaries.	Jan 2010

First, Lorenzo et al. claim that the second order peak could arise from nonmagnetic effects such as magnetoelastic strain fields. Second, that the second order peak could arise from magnetic effects, but caused by an unequal distribution of spinup and spin-down domains. Third, that the shift with incidence angle of the second order peak might not arise from x-ray standing wave fields. 	Interface alloying effects in the magnetic properties of Fe nanoislands capped with different materials Y. Huttel , E. Navarro , N. D. Telling , G. Van Der Laan , F. Pigazo , F. J. Cebollada Physical Review B 78 (10) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.78.104403 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We show that Fe nanoislands capped with Al, Pd, and Pt protecting layers include an alloy at the interface with the capping layer, which explains the previously known capping layer dependence on the interparticle magnetic coupling. Vibrating sample magnetometry results, for instance, are evidencing a reduction in the magnetization measured under a magnetic field of 15 mT, which is larger in the case of the Al capping and which is due to the presence of a magnetically dead interface alloy. This reduction is also observed at the atomic level using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, showing a capping layer dependence of the Fe magnetic-moment reduction that is similar for the Pd and Pt capping, and stronger for the Al capping. The trend in the magnetic properties as a function of the capping layer is explained in the light of x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results that evidence the formation of alloys at the interface between the Fe nanoislands and the capping layers. The present results highlight the strong influence of interface alloying in systems of reduced dimensionality. In particular, it is shown that the magnetic properties are strongly affected at both the atomic and macroscopic level.	Sep 2008

Gilles Physical Review B 71 (18) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.71.184436 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We have studied bilayers and trilayers of FePd thin-film alloys, where each of the constituting layers has a different magnetic anisotropy, as controlled by the growth conditions. The competition between the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and the shape anisotropy in these films leads to the formation of stripe domains with a period of ∼ 100 nm , which has been imaged by magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The average magnetic anisotropy has been obtained from the in-plane and perpendicular magnetic field dependence, measured using vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). We measured the soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (SXRMS) at the Fe L 3 edge using σ linearly polarized light, which is sensitive to the magnetization profile in the layers. The magnetic configuration of the layer systems was modeled using micromagnetic software (GL-FFT, ©CNRS). The results of the micromagnetic modeling were used for a numerical simulation of the reflectivity scan and the magnetic rod scans of the SXRMS. This allowed us to determine parameters, such as the lateral roughness, the magnetic period, the magnetic correlation length, and the magnetic layer thickness. The good agreement obtained with the experimental results demonstrates that SXRMS provides in-depth information that cannot be obtained from either MFM or VSM.	May 2005

Larese Physical Review B 74 (8) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.74.085421 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Neutron diffraction has been used to characterize the structure of the solid phase of the completed monolayer of n butane on the MgO(100) surface at low temperature. The monolayer is found to adopt a commensurate structure with lattice constants a=29.47 Å and b=4.21 Å, P2gg symmetry and four molecules in the unit cell. Excellent agreement with the experimental diffraction pattern is realized, using a Lorenztian profile to describe the line shape.	Aug 2006

Haznar Physical Review B 70 (18) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.70.180402 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We have used coherent soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering to locally track reversal processes in magnetic nanostructures. Coherent illumination of a limited number of nano-objects in a CoPt nanoline grating produces a specific speckle pattern, whose evolution under in situ magnetic field reveals the true local magnetic ordering. While each nanoline behaves as a single macrospin whose direction depends on the dipolar coupling with neighbors, the global reversal of the line array is successively governed by two effects: first, by the random distribution of defects, followed by the dipolar coupling favoring antiferromagnetic ordering. The energy dependence of an OO diffraction peak over the L2,3 edges is compared to ligand-field calculations allowing a distinction between the influences of Jahn-Teller distortions and spin correlations. The energy dependence of the diffraction peak at the Mn L1 edge is remarkably different from that observed at the Mn K edge.	Feb 2004

Newton Physical Review Letters 98 (5) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.98.056102 PMID: 17358876 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We have determined the structure of a complex rhodium carbonyl chloride [Rh(CO)2Cl] molecule adsorbed on the TiO2(110) surface by the normal incidence x-ray standing wave technique. The data show that the technique is applicable to reducible oxide systems and that the dominant adsorbed species is undissociated with Rh binding atop bridging oxygen and to the Cl found close to the fivefold coordinated Ti ions in the surface. A minority geminal dicarbonyl species, where Rh-Cl bond scission has occurred, is found bridging the bridging oxygen ions forming a high-symmetry site.	Feb 2007
