The energy dependence of an OO diffraction peak over the L2,3 edges is compared to ligand-field calculations allowing a distinction between the influences of Jahn-Teller distortions and spin correlations. The energy dependence of the diffraction peak at the Mn L1 edge is remarkably different from that observed at the Mn K edge.	Feb 2004

First, Lorenzo et al. claim that the second order peak could arise from nonmagnetic effects such as magnetoelastic strain fields. Second, that the second order peak could arise from magnetic effects, but caused by an unequal distribution of spinup and spin-down domains. Third, that the shift with incidence angle of the second order peak might not arise from x-ray standing wave fields. The observed quasielastic response is decomposed into two components, one reflecting transitions within the doublets (narrow) and the other transitions between the doublets (broad) of the effective Dy quartet ground state. The widths of the narrow and broad components are shown to arise from fluctuations in the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole moments, respectively.	Jan 2005

The long-wavelength helical order (TC=280 K) is suppressed at a critical pressure pc≈19 GPa. An anomaly at TX(p) and strong deviations from a Fermi-liquid behavior in a wide pressure range above pc suggest that the suppression of TC disagrees with the standard notion of a quantum critical phase transition. The metallic ground state persisting at high pressure can be described by band-structure calculations if zero-point motion is included. The shortest FeGe interatomic distance display discontinuous changes in the pressure dependence close to the TC(p) phase line.	Jan 2007

Newton Physical Review Letters 98 (5) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.98.056102 PMID: 17358876 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We have determined the structure of a complex rhodium carbonyl chloride [Rh(CO)2Cl] molecule adsorbed on the TiO2(110) surface by the normal incidence x-ray standing wave technique. The data show that the technique is applicable to reducible oxide systems and that the dominant adsorbed species is undissociated with Rh binding atop bridging oxygen and to the Cl found close to the fivefold coordinated Ti ions in the surface. A minority geminal dicarbonyl species, where Rh-Cl bond scission has occurred, is found bridging the bridging oxygen ions forming a high-symmetry site.	Feb 2007

We show that Ni2+ L (2,3) XMLD in cubic lattices has to be described as linear combination of two fundamental spectra - not one as previously assumed. The spectra are calculated using atomic multiplet theory and the angular dependence is derived from crystal field symmetry. Applying our results to Co/NiO(001) interfaces, we find perpendicular coupling between Ni and Co moments.	May 2007

Söderlind Physical Review Letters 98 (23) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.98.236402 PMID: 17677923 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Using electron energy-loss spectroscopy, many-electron atomic spectral calculations, and density functional theory, we show that angular-momentum coupling in the 5f states plays a decisive role in the formation of the magnetic moment in Cm metal. The 5f states of Cm in intermediate coupling are strongly shifted towards the LS coupling limit due to exchange interaction, unlike most actinide elements where the effective spin-orbit interaction prevails. Hund's rule coupling is the key to producing the large spin polarization that dictates the newly found crystal structure of Cm under pressure.	Jun 2007

Marrows Physical Review Letters 99 (12) DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.99.127001 PMID: 17930542 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Hall probe microscopy has been used to image vortex-antivortex molecules induced in superconducting Pb films by the stray fields from square arrays of magnetic dots. We have directly observed spontaneous vortex-antivortex pairs and studied how they interact with added free (anti)fluxons in an applied magnetic field. We observe a variety of phenomena arising from competing symmetries which either drive added antivortices to join antivortex shells around dots or stabilize the translationally symmetric antivortex lattice between the dots. Added vortices annihilate antivortex shells, leading first to a stable "nulling state" with no free fluxons and then, at high densities, to vortex shells around the dots stabilized by the asymmetric antipinning potential. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with Ginzburg-Landau calculations.	Sep 2007
