Fallarino Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 1247 6th National Conference on Engineering Physics and the 1st International Conference on Applied Physics Engineering & Innovation DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/1247/1/012013 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: In this work we report on the magnetocaloric effect of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) and La2/3Ca1/3Mn0.94Cr0.06O3 (LCMCrO) manganite thin films grown by DC magnetron sputtering on LaAlO3 (100) substrates. X-ray diffraction shows that both doped and undoped films crystallize in the orthorhombic structure. Magnetic measurements show a decrease in both the Curie temperature, TC , and the saturation magnetization, MS , for the LCMCrO sample. The change in the magnetic entropy (ΔSm ) was extracted from hysteresis loops at different temperatures around the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition, displaying a maximum of entropy change (ΔSm ) max near TC in both films. Moreover, a shift in (ΔSm ) max toward temperatures above TC with increasing magnetic field and a broadening of the entropy change curve were observed. Results of refrigeration cooling power show a lower efficiency for LCMCrO. In order to obtain a local insight into the magnetic interactions of these films, measurements of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) were performed. XMCD suggests that an antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn4+ - Mn3+ is favored with Cr3+ incorporation, which reduces the Mn L 2,3 XMCD signal and results in a decrease of MS and (ΔSm ) max in LCMCrO films. B24 uses a combination of conventional and super-resolution visible-light fluorescence microscopy and soft X-ray tomography (cryoSXT) to provide 3D imaging of the cellular landscape at a resolution up to 25 nm in cryo-preserved biological samples up to 12 μm thick. B24 offers user-friendly, semi-automated 3D correlative cryo-imaging through an integrated platform of methods that encompass (a) sample preparation and evaluation, (b) data collection and processing and (c) data analysis and correlation. CryoSXT fills the current resolution gap between fluorescence and electron microscopy while cryo-structured illumination microscopy provides the additional dimension of chemical localization within the same cellular ultrastructure captured by cryoSXT. Beamline instruments can be accessed biannually by academics and industry globally through peer-reviewed standard and rapid access proposal processes. The B24 user base is primarily academic research groups studying cell function and cytopathology in biological systems ranging from viruses and algae to mammalian cells and proto-tissue complexes. Future work will consolidate development efforts and experiences gained thus far to enable high-throughput data collection. Special emphasis is placed on the delivery of other integrated advanced imaging methods such as X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and phase contrast.	Dec 2022

Blanco Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 519, 191 REXS 2013 - Workshop on Resonant Elastic X-ray Scattering in Condensed Matter DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/519/1/012012 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [7720] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Results that support a new chiral phase in the only multiferroic material known above room temperature have been obtained by a resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction experiment, with the incoming x-ray beam tuned near the Fe K-edge (7.1135 keV), performed in its ferroelectric phase. The R3c forbidden reflection (0,0,9)H was studied as a function of the rotation of the crystal about the Bragg wavector in both phases, paramagnetic (700 K) and antiferromagnetic (300 K). The data gathered is consistent with a chiral structure formed by a circular cycloid propagating along (1,1,0)H. Templeton and Templeton (T&T) scattering at 700 K is attributed in part to charge-like quadrupoles absent in a standard model of a cycloid in which a material vector generates all electronic states of the resonant ion. Extensive sets of azimuthal-angle data are used to infer values of three atomic multipoles in a satisfactory minimal model of the iron electronic structure, with a quadrupole (E1-E1 event) and a hexadecapole (E2-E2 event) contributing T&T scattering, plus a magnetic dipole (E1-E1). B18-Core EXAFS I18-Microfocus Spectroscopy Detectors	A time resolved microfocus XEOL facility at the Diamond Light Source Fred Mosselmans , Richard Taylor , Paul Quinn , Adrian Finch , Giannantonio Cibin , Diego Gianolio , Andrei Sapelkin Journal of Physics: Conference Series 425 11th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI2012) DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/425/18/182009 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: We have constructed a Time-Resolved X-ray Excited Optical Luminescence (TR-XEOL) detection system at the Microfocus Spectroscopy beamline I18 at the Diamond Light Source. Using the synchrotron in "hybrid bunch mode", the data collection is triggered by the RF clock, and we are able to record XEOL photons with a time resolution of 6.1 ps during the 230 ns gap between the hybrid bunch and the main train of electron bunches. We can detect photons over the range 180-850 nm using a bespoke optical fibre, with X-ray excitation energies between 2 and 20 keV. We have used the system to study a range of feldspars. The detector is portable and has also been used on beamline B18 to collect Optically Determined X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (OD-XAS) in QEXAFS mode.	Mar 2013

The aberration was measured by the segmented Ronchigram auto-correlation function method using the graphene lattice. With emittances approaching 1nm rad this typically requires sub micrometer positional stability at the source point over time scales from milliseconds to at least hours and ideally much longer. These challenges are routinely met by the use of fast orbit feedback systems. This contribution sets out to first establish a relevant representation of stability over many orders of magnitude in time and looks at available stable references. To complement this, data on the electron and X-ray beam stability achieved at various operational light sources is compared.	Mar 2013

Theoretical Physics	Applications of soft x-ray magnetic dichroism Gerrit Van Der Laan Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 430 15th International Conference on X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS15) DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/430/1/012127 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Applications of x-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism (XMCD and XMLD) are reviewed in the soft x-ray region, covering the photon energy range 0.4-2 keV, which includes important absorption edges such as the 3d transition metal L2,3 and rare earth M4,5. These techniques enable a broad range of novel and exciting studies such as on the electronic properties and magnetic ordering of novel nanostructured systems. XMCD has a sensitivity better than 0.01 monolayer (at the surface) and due to simple detection methods, such as electron yield and fluorescence yield, it has become a workhorse technique in physics and materials science. It is the only element-specific technique able to distinguish between the spin and orbital parts of the magnetic moments. The applications are vast, e.g., in x-ray holographic imaging, XMCD gives a spatial resolution of tens of nm. While many studies in the past were centered on physics, more recently new applications have emerged in areas such as chemistry, biology and earth and environmental sciences. For instance, XMCD allows the determination of the cation occupations in spinels and other ternary oxides. In scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM), XMCD enables us to map biogenic magnetite redox changes resulting in a surprising degree of variation on the nanoscale. Another recent development is ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) detected by time-resolved XMCD which opens the door to element-, site- and layer-specific dynamical measurements. By exploiting the time structure of the pulsed synchrotron radiation from the storage ring the relative phase of precession in the individual magnetic layers of a multilayer stack can be determined. We show here the possibilities and the achievable performances of the X-ray Speckle Tracking technique for optics characterization: the description is illustrated with the case study of the characterization of a compound refractive lens. This optical element was characterized online using the speckle tracking method with nanoradian accuracy and micrometer spatial resolution. For discussion purpose, the results are compared to the ones obtained under similar conditions using a grating interferometer.	Mar 2013

Brown Journal Of Physics: Conference Series 644 Electron Microscopy and Analysis Group Conference (EMAG2015) DOI: 10.1088/1742-6596/644/1/012037 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: A tetragonal crystal structure is required for barium titanate nanoparticles to exhibit the nonlinear optical effect of second harmonic light generation (SHG) for use as a biomarker when illuminated by a near-infrared source. Here we use synchrotron XRD to elucidate the tetragonal phase of commercially purchased tetragonal, cubic and hydrothermally prepared barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles by peak fitting with reference patterns. The local phase of individual nanoparticles is determined by STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), measuring the core-loss O K-edge and the Ti L3-edge energy separation of the t2g, eg peaks. The results show a change in energy separation between the t2g and eg peak from the surface and core of the particles, suggesting an intraparticle phase mixture of the barium titanate nanoparticles. HAADF-STEM and bright field TEM-EDX show cellular uptake of the hydrothermally prepared BaTiO3 nanoparticles, highlighting the potential for application as biomarkers.	Oct 2015
