Petrenko , László Almásy , Peter Kopčanský Molecules 26 DOI: 10.3390/molecules26226960 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [17415] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Ferritin, a spherically shaped protein complex, is responsible for iron storage in bacteria, plants, animals, and humans. Various ferritin iron core compositions in organisms are associated with specific living requirements, health state, and different biochemical roles of ferritin isomers. Magnetoferritin, a synthetic ferritin derivative, serves as an artificial model system of unusual iron phase structures found in humans. We present the results of a complex structural study of magnetoferritins prepared by controlled in vitro synthesis. Using various complementary methods, it was observed that manipulation of the synthesis technology can improve the physicochemical parameters of the system, which is useful in applications. Thus, a higher synthesis temperature leads to an increase in magnetization due to the formation of the magnetite phase. An increase in the iron loading factor has a more pronounced impact on the protein shell structure in comparison with the pH of the aqueous medium. On the other hand, a higher loading factor at physiological temperature enhances the formation of an amorphous phase instead of magnetite crystallization. It was confirmed that the iron-overloading effect alone (observed during pathological events) cannot contribute to the formation of magnetite.	Nov 2021

Taddei , Qiang Zhang , Qingzhen Huang , Qiang Li , Kenichi Kato , Chiu Chung Tang , Alexandra Gibbs , Chin-Wei Wang , Jinxia Deng , Jun Chen , Hongjie Zhang , Xianran Xing Physical Review Letters 127 DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.127.055501 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Super Invar (SIV), i.e., zero thermal expansion of metallic materials underpinned by magnetic ordering, is of great practical merit for a wide range of high precision engineering. However, the relatively narrow temperature window of SIV in most materials restricts its potential applications in many critical fields. Here, we demonstrate the controlled design of thermal expansion in a family of R 2 ( Fe , Co ) 17 materials ( R = rare Earth). We find that adjusting the Fe-Co content tunes the thermal expansion behavior and its optimization leads to a record-wide SIV with good cyclic stability from 3–461 K, almost twice the range of currently known SIV. In situ neutron diffraction, Mössbauer spectra and first-principles calculations reveal the 3 d bonding state transition of the Fe-sublattice favors extra lattice stress upon magnetic ordering. On the other hand, Co content induces a dramatic enhancement of the internal molecular field, which can be manipulated to achieve “ultrawide” SIV over broad temperature, composition and magnetic field windows. Battle , Maxim Avdeev Journal Of Solid State Chemistry DOI: 10.1016/j.jssc.2018.09.012 Diamond Proposal Number(s): [13284] Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Polycrystalline samples of the perovskites Ca2PrCr2BO9 (B=Nb, Ta) have been synthesised using the standard ceramic method and characterized by x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction and magnetometry. Both crystallise in the orthorhombic space group Pnma and exhibit magnetisation reversal when field-cooled in an applied field of 100 Oe. The absolute value of the negative magnetisation at 2 K in an applied field of 100 Oe is an order of magnitude greater in Ca2PrCr2TaO9 than it is for Ca2PrCr2NbO9. Magnetometry and powder neutron diffraction showed that the Cr3+ cations in Ca2PrCr2NbO9 and Ca2PrCr2TaO9 order in a GyFz magnetic structure below 110 and 130 K, respectively. The Pr3+ cations remain paramagnetic down to ~10 K and show no-long range order at 2 K. Both compounds show a large degree of hysteresis in M(H), with coercive fields of 3.79 kOe and 3.03 kOe at 2 K.
