The Jungfrau series of detectors from PSI use integration and adaptive gain, to offer very high frame rate and dynamic range, suitable for high-flux and time-resolved measurements. They are becoming more widely used, to take advantage of increasing light source brightness. We report on our experiences in testing the performance of a Jungfrau-1M without illumination, with a laboratory X-ray tube and on a microfocus beamline. The Jungfrau-1M was found to be able to resolve single photons in the laboratory and on the beamline. It was confirmed that range switching from high to intermediate gain is associated with a discontinuity in the detector response. Two methods of dark frame subtraction were compared for their effect on minimizing this discontinuity. The Jungfrau-1M was found to be very effective for recording macromolecular crystallography diffraction patterns, with no apparent detriment from the discontinuity. The Diamond machine will be upgraded in 2028–9 and will operate at significantly higher flux than at present, necessitating increased use of integrating detectors, such as Jungfrau, in the future. I24-Microfocus Macromolecular Crystallography Detectors	Climbing mountains: building a data capture and correction system for JUNGFRAU 9M Graeme Winter , Nick E. Devenish , James O'Hea , Gary Yendell 75th Annual Meeting of the American Crystallographic Association DOI: 10.1063/4.0000827 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The JUNGFRAU detector is a charge integrating, high-frame-rate, imaging detector developed by the PSI detector group, originally to support the SwissFEL Aramis beamline. The detector includes adaptive gain switching to give single photon sensitivity whilst also allowing sufficient analogue dynamic range to record ∼10,000 12keV photons. The use of adaptive gains requires a multi-stage data correction procedure, factoring in the pedestal and gain value for each pixel for each gain mode: at 2kHz frame rate this makes for a non-trivial undertaking. At the SLS a data capture system for this has been developed, JUNGFRAUJOCH which uses a number of Xilinx FPGA boards to read the UDP data stream and perform the correction and the initial stage of data compression, before reading out to the CPU for compression. Whilst this is an effective solution, the technology choice of FPGA high level synthesis for programming has a very high barrier to entry. Some kind of hardware acceleration is however critical to ensure the correction and compression keep up with the data acquisition rate over the long term. At Diamond we are also acquiring a JUNGFRAU 9M detector, to use for rotation and serial crystallography on beamline I24. This brings us to the challenge: adopt JUNGFRAUJOCH or develop an alternative system, since the wider view of high throughput computing has changed over the last few years. Here we present an alternative system build around the NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchip (GH200) which includes a 72 ARM NEOVERSE v2 CPU cores, an NVIDIA H100 GPU and high bandwidth memory (Figure 1). The capabilities of this system allow us to consider building a data capture, correction and initial analysis system to support the JUNGFRAU 9M detector at Diamond Light Source, using far more mainstream technologies (CUDA for the accelerator programming, SLS detector for the front-end data capture) and offering the opportunity to tailor the system to fit in with the use cases being developed at Diamond Light Source beamline I24. This development also takes the opportunity to explore alternative methods for representing the data, keeping the data from modules separated allowing parallelism in data capture and analysis. Greer ICALEPCS2019 DOI: 10.18429/JACoW-ICALEPCS2019-THBPP05 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: The increasing data throughput of modern detectors is a growing challenge for back-end data acquisition systems. OdinData provides a scalable framework for data acquisition used by multiple beamlines at Diamond Light Source (DLS). While it can be implemented standalone, OdinControl is used to provide a convenient interface to OdinData. Eiger detectors at DLS were initially integrated into the Odin framework specifically for the data acquisition capability, but the addition of detector control provides a more coherent and easily deployable system. OdinControl provides a generic HTTP API as a single point of control for various devices and applications. Adapters can abstract the low-level control of a detector into a consistent API, making it easier for high-level applications to support different types of detector. This paper sets out the design and development of Odin as a control system agnostic interface to integrate Eiger detectors into EPICS beamline control systems at DLS, as well as the current status of operation. Conf. on Accelerator and Large Experimental Control Systems ICALEPCS2017 DOI: 10.18429/JACoW-ICALEPCS2017-TUPHA159 Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Malcolm is a middlelayer framework that implements high level configure/run behaviour of control system components like those used in continuous scans. It was created as part of the Mapping project at Diamond Light Source to improve the performance of continuous scanning and make it easier to share code between beamlines. It takes the form of a Python framework which wraps up groups of EPICS PVs into modular "Blocks". A hierarchy of these can be created, with the Blocks at the top of the tree providing a higher level scanning interface to GDA, Diamond's Generic Data Acquisition software. The framework can be used as a library in continuous scanning scripts, or can act as a server via pluggable communications modules. It currently has server and client support for both pvData over pvAccess, and JSON over websockets. When running as a webserver this allows a web GUI to be used to visualize the connections between these blocks (like the wiring of EPICS areaDetector plugins). This paper details the architecture and design of framework, and gives some examples of its use at Diamond.	Jan 2018

Conf. on Accelerator and Large Experimental Control Systems ICALEPCS2017 DOI: 10.18429/JACoW-ICALEPCS2017-TUPHA212 Open Access Show Abstract ▼ Abstract: Detectors currently being commissioned at Diamond Light Source (DLS) bring the need for more sophisticated control and data acquisition software. The Excalibur 1M and 3M are modular detectors comprised of rows of identical stripes. The Odin framework emulates this architecture by operating multiple file writers on different server nodes, managed by a central controller. The low-level control and communication is implemented in a vendor supplied C library with a set of C-Python bindings, providing a fast and robust API to control the detector nodes, alongside a simple interface to interact with the file writer instances over ZeroMQ. The file writer is a C++ module that uses plugins to interpret the raw data and provide the format to write to file, allowing it to be used with other detectors such as Percival and Eiger. At DLS we implement an areaDetector driver to integrate Odin with the beamline EPICS control system. However, because Odin provides a simple HTTP Rest API, it can be used by any site control system. This paper presents the architecture and design of the Odin framework and illustrates its usage as a controller of complex, modular detector systems.	Jan 2018
